23 Aug DOH Reiterates the Importance of Breastfeeding
Department of Health (DOH) Region 10 reminds all mothers the importance of breastfeeding to give their babies the best quality of milk.
On August 19, Friday, a forum “Talakayan sa PIA” was held in Cagayan de Oro city with Dr. Jocelyn P. Torrecampo, CHD for Northern Mindanao. During this forum, Torrecampo said, ” a pregnant woman should do breastfeeding because it’s the best milk, while it’s economically wise, it gives the best start and protection to infants.”
For this year, among the 104,685 live births, there are only 92,779 or 88% infants who were breastfed as the data shows.
The Field Health Information System (FHIS) standard is based on the 2.7% of the total population of six-month-old children and not on the number of live births DOH explained.
92% of the babies were breastfed for at least six months in 2014 and on 2015 it dropped down to 72%.
Aside from mothers who do not practice breastfeed, the decreased percentage was affected by shifting of the denominator which the standard 2.7% of the whole population said Gilda Ajoc, a DOH nurse.
Ajoc stated, “Women should study and understand the breastfeeding process and benefits. Mothers to prepare both physically and psychologically to be able to provide the best possible care for their infants.”
