Mga higala! The Department of Health (DOH) has received a report from the EcoWaste Coalition regarding dangerous COSMETIC PRODUCTS laden with MERCURY that are being illegally sold here in Cagayan de Oro City.

The report was sent through a letter written by Thony Dizon, the Chemical Safety Campaigner of the EcoWaste Coalition.

According to an article by Inquirer.Net, Dizon stated in the letter that their environmental group conducted a market investigation in Cagayan de Oro last week and “found several imported skin whitening cosmetics banned by the FDA openly and unashamedly being sold by retailers engaged in the sale of beauty and herbal products, as well as Chinese medicines, especially in Cogon.”

The group bought 18 pieces of banned Collagen Plus Vit E, Erna, JJJ, Jiaoli, S’Zitang and Xinjiaoli skin whitening creams from nine stores located in Cogon, Divisoria and Lapasan, which were illegally imported from China and Indonesia. Then, upon testing, they discovered that the products were contaminated with mercury above the allowable limit of 1 parts per million (ppm).

The group noted that Collagen Plus Vit E had the highest concentration of mercury at 6,020 ppm.

In case you don’t know, the levels of mercury in these cosmetic products could result in kidney damage, skin rashes, skin discoloration, scarring, and more. It can also reduce the skin’s normal resistance against bacterial and fungal infections.
