In an article from Sunstar.com.ph, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-Region 10 is questioning the city government of Cagayan de Oro City for its failure to liquidate a total amount of P3.121 million of pension fund for senior citizens.

DSWD said through a letter sent to CdeO City Mayor Oscar Moreno that it was “saddened” that the local government of the city has not yet liquidated the remaining balance of P330,000 for the year 2016 and more than P2 million from the P9. 070 million intended for 2017, that was supposed to be submitted to DSWD on or before the 15th day of the 2nd month of every quarter.

The letter signed by DSWD-10 Assistant Director Mandel Borres goes to say that the delay of the liquidation resulted to the withholding of stipends for senior citizens and is a disadvantage especially to those who have waited for the immediate release of the pension fund.

Councilor Nadya Emano-Elipe shared her dismay and said that there were about 3,011 senior citizens who did not receive their pensions for the third quarter of 2017 because of the unliquidated balance for the 1st and 2nd quarter.

She also said that the city government should make it sure that money released by the government should be liquidated right away because it is a government fund needed for the beneficiaries of certain government programs like the stipend given to senior citizens.

Under the current program, senior citizens in the city are receiving P5,000 a month.

DSWD previously confirmed that it is already coordinating with the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWD) regarding any action to address the issue.

There will also be a hearing will be jointly conducted by the committees on social service and senior citizens to hear any possible solutions from appropriate government agencies.
