28 Jul Duterte Says PH Hosting Miss Universe Not Among His Government’s Priorities
“Dili ko,” President Rodrigo Duterte said during a conversation with his friends in Davao and some journalists referring to the topic about the Philippines to host Miss Universe 2017 and if his government will spend money for the said event. He added that the government has to prioritize other things such as the drive for higher spending in infrastructure.
In a report from TV Patrol, organizing the next Miss Universe pageant will cost at around $10 to $12 million.
Earlier in a statement, Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Wanda Teo said that Duterte has “approved in principle” the proposal of their department regarding the hosting of the said pageant. However, with Duterte’s recent statement, and with the DOT being the key contributor to efforts in bringing Miss Universe pageant to the country, DOT said that the private sector is being considered to shoulder the budget instead.
“Sponsoring Miss Universe is our focus right now, with the plan and sources of funding in tow. We are ready to seize the moment.”
