29 Sep Duterte Orders the Display of Portraits of National Heroes in Gov’t Offices and Public Schools
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered to remove the portraits of public officials displayed in government offices and public schools and instead to be replaced with the portraits of national heroes of the country.
In an article from Inquirer.net, Memorandum Circular Order No. 25 which was signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea last September 15 contained the directive. It aims to “strengthen” the people’s nationalism, love of country and respect for heroes and to raise “social consciousness and patriotism.”
The national heroes identified by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines whose portraits or paintings can be used to replace the existing portraits of elected public officials are, Philippine National Hero Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Aguinaldo, Apolinario Mabini, Marcelo del Pilar, Juan Luna, Melchora Aquino, Gabriela Silang, Lapu-Lapu, F. Jose Burgos, Fr. Mariano Gomez, Fr. Jacinto Zamora, Emilio Jacinto and Jose Abad Santos.
It can be remembered that the President jested that he also wanted to personally remove his portrait and the rest of his family from the Malacañang Palace as he finds it “silly” for one to put his or her family photos in some parts of the house.
He also left a reminder to state agencies with the instruction to address him “your excellency” in official communications, events, and materials.
