25 May Duterte Supports the Use of Medical Marijuana
On Monday, May 23, the president-elect Rodrigo Duterte said that he will support the use of Medical marijuana, yet he will not approve the legalization of marijuana.
He said in an interview, “Medicinal marijuana – yes because it is really an ingredient of modern medicine now. There are medicines right now being developed or already in the market that contains marijuana as a component.”
In the U.S., 24 states have already approved marijuana for medical use. But, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have not approved it as a medicine.
It was known that multiple diseases and symptoms have been alleviated by the chemicals extracted from marijuana according to several scientific studies. Certain medicines have been developed by the Scientists from the plant’s oil to treat some health conditions, reducing pain and inflammation, and controlling epileptic seizures.
Currently, clinical trials are being made in the U.S. using marijuana extracts in treating diseases and conditions, such as HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, mental illness and even addictions.
Yet, marijuana use or possession in the Philippines remains illegal. A person guilty of such offense will be imprisoned. Duterte is okay in the medical use of marijuana, will he pave the way for making it legal to use it for medical purposes once he is seated in the Palace?
That is yet to be answered in the following months.
