On Monday, presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte warned taxi drivers that refusing to give exact change to passengers is a criminal offense and that they will be charged of estafa.

During the press conference, Duterte said that it is an act of extortion or illegal exaction quoting, “Iyung mga taxi both dito sa Davao at Maynila, alam mo, kapag kinuha mo iyung kasi wala kang sinsilyo (change) at hindi mo talaga ibinalik, that is estafa. That is not a simple violation.”

He also added that for those drivers who don’t have loose change, they better not to pick up passengers.

“Kayong mga cab driver, dapat meron kayong loose change,” Duterte said.

He asked taxi companies to provide their drivers with enough loose change before they pick up passengers at the start of the day. A piece of advice from Duterte, passengers must estimate how much they need to pay to the driver before their trip.
