24 May Duterte Will Allow a Burial for Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani
On Monday, May 23, President-elect Rodrigo Duterte said in an interview, “I will allow the burial of President Marcos sa Libingan ng mga Bayani not because he is a hero, but because he was a Filipino soldier, period.”
A burial for the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr in the Libingan ng mga Bayani is one of Duterte’s promises during his presidential campaign on February when he visited Ilocos Norte, the home province of the Marcoses.
“That can be arranged immediately,” he added.
This may upset some who oppose the burial of Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani, considering his human rights abuses during his dictatorship.
But Duterte said, “It has long created a division among our people. Almost all Ilocanos naghihinakit talaga.”
He was asked if this will really perpetuate a healing to the country. Duterte answered, “I do not know, but it would erase one hatred. I am sure it would erase from our people one hatred.”
For the victims of the human rights abuses, he said, “Nandiyan na ‘yung k’wan, kobrahin ‘nyo na ‘yung pera.”
Duterte is eyeing to have the burial made on September 11, the birthday of Marcos.
Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr, the only son of the late dictator is in a close race against Liberal Party (LP) bet Leni Robredo for vice presidency.
