23 May Gibo Teodoro Still Undecided in Accepting Defense Chief Position
On Sunday, May 22, Gibo Teodoro said that his decision to accept the offer of president-elect Rodrigo Duterte is still pending. The offer was for him to lead the Department of National Defense (DND) of the Philippines, a position he once held under the Gloria Administration.
“He told me earlier he wanted me to consider it and I answered that it’s not a decision I can make on my own. I have to consult my family and other commitments I have made,” said Teodoro, referring to Duterte.
“The importance of the position to the national interest requires no less than serious consultation especially with the President-elect before accepting such, in order to ensure that a prospective Secretary is a right choice,” he added.
Yet, a video of Duterte on a press-conference that has been shot on May 21 indicated that Gibo has already declined the offer. Duterte said, “Gibo has begged off. I have in mind a military man although retired. I have to talk to him.”
A different statement concerning Gibo’s acceptance when he said: “I have not decided yet,” on his visit in Davao on May 16.
The question is: does Gibo already made a decision to reject the offer as what Duterte said? Or is Gibo still in the process of thinking if he would accept such position? The answer to that question is yet to be confirmed.
Gibo once ran for president in 2010 that was then won by his cousin Benigno “Noy Noy” Aquino III.
Recently, on August 2015, Teodoro was named board chairman of Sagittarius Mines Incorporated (SMI).
