15 Aug Hero’s Welcome for Hidilyn Diaz in Zamboanga!
On August 12, Friday afternoon, the local government gave a hero’s welcome to the Rio Olympian silver medalist Hidlyn Diaz in her hometown in Zamboanga.
After meeting with President Duterte in Davao City, Diaz walked on a red carpet as she arrived in her hometown. A grand motorcade was also held in Zamboanga where residents went out from their houses to see her in person. Diaz wearing a red jacket embellished with the Philippine flag waving her medal in front of the crowd. Small Philippines flags were waved by the citizens as Diaz brought home the first Olympic medal in 20 years.
Additional P500,000 incentive will be provided by local government for Diaz winning the Rio Olympic and inspiring Filipino athletes.
Diaz plans to buy land in her village at Mampang, Zamboanga Sibugay to build her own gym. She wants to help her co-athletes by giving them free training and preparing their future competitions both locally and abroad. As she spoke, “Bibilhin ko yun lupa sa tabi ng bahay namin at magpapatayo ako ng gym. Yun ibang pera hindi ko po alam kung ano ang gagawin ko.”
Diaz parents were so proud of her winning the silver medal. her father is a motorcycle taxi driver and her mother is a housekeeper.
