10 Dec House Approves Bill Allowing Women To Keep Maiden Surnames
Mga higala! The House of Representatives has passed a measure allowing women in the Philippines to retain their maiden surnames after marriage!
This measure (House Bill 10459) was unanimously approved by 227 congressmen on its third and final reading.
ICYDK, this new bill will amend Article 370 of Republic Act 386 or the New Civil Code of the Philippines, letting women use any of the following after getting married:
- maiden first name and surname
- maiden first name and surname and add her husband’s surname
- maiden first name and her husband’s surname
- husband’s full name, but prefixing a word indicating that she is his wife, such as “Mrs.”
