House Approves Bill Declaring 200-Year-Old Dao Tree In CDO As “Heritage Tree” & Tourist Attraction

Mga higala! The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading House Bill No. 7987, a measure declaring the 200-year-old Dao tree (Dracontomelon dao) in Cagayan de Oro City as a “Heritage Tree” and a tourist attraction!

The said bill was authored by Deputy Speaker/Representative Rufus B. Rodriguez.

ICYDK, the Dao tree is one of the oldest and biggest of its kind in the country and is around 49 meters tall and almost 223 centimeters (about 2.2 meters) in diameter. It is located within a small forest in Bayombong, Brgy. Cugman.

With this bill, a plan to protect the CDO Heritage Tree and to promote it (and its surrounding area) as a tourist attraction will need to be prepared and implemented by the Department of Tourism (DOT), in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Cagayan de Oro City Cultural Heritage Conservation Council, the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, and other concerned agencies.

This plan will also include the construction and maintenance of appropriate facilities and infrastructure to enhance tourism in the area.

House Bill No. 7987 has now been transmitted to the Senate.
