10 Feb House Panel Approve Bills Banning Mining & Logging In Cagayan de Oro City
Mga higala! The House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources has approved two bills that prohibit mining and logging operations in Cagayan de Oro City!
The said bills, House Bill No. 430 and 431, were authored by Deputy Speaker and 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez. 430 declares the city as a mining-free zone while 431 bans logging.
According to Rep. Rodriguez’s post, these bills aim to stop the said activities from further damaging the environment and prevent flooding in CDO and its neighboring areas.
Rodriguez even cited that “In the Jan. 11, 2009 floods that befell Cagayan de Oro, 37,086 persons or 7,410 families were affected, with 95 houses totally destroyed and 71 partially damaged. Further, typhoon Sendong in late 2011 brought about the worst destruction in the city, with the human toll exceeding 1,000.”
BTW, violators can receive imprisonment of 6-12 years and a fine of P100,000 to P500,000.
