29 Dec Improvised Explosive Device Blasts Town Fiesta in Leyte Injuring 23
At around 9PM of Wednesday night, December 28, 2016, a town fiesta in Hilongos, Leyte was interrupted by an explosion of a cellphone-triggered improvised explosive device (IED) injuring some 23 residents who were just enjoying a boxing event held in Barangay Central Poblacion.
According to a report from CNN Philippines, the victims were then brought to the Hilongos District Hospital and other hospitals nearby.
Public affairs officer of the Army’s 8th Infantry Division 1Lt. Cherry Junia said that there were no suspects identified behind the blast yet. He added that the authorities were still confirming how many of the victims were in critical condition.
Alberto Villahermosa, Mayor of Hilongos, said that the IED was placed near a water pump at the Rizal Plaza, and that there were two explosions with most of the victims hit below the knees.
