Last September 6, 2016, a send-off ceremony was held for the 68th Infantry ‘Kaagapay’ Battalion of the Philippine Army which was redeployed from Eastern Mindanao to Western Mindanao to help the government forces who are currently conducting the ongoing campaign to eliminate the rebels- Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).

“Actually, we are pursuing many ASG sub-groups and each battalion is committed to tracking down a specific bandit group,” said Western Mindanao Command (WMC) spokesperson Maj. Filemon Tan last September 5, 2016, who also noted that their task is getting tough as the rebel group is now splitting into smaller groups which are being commanded by Radullan Sahiron and Alhabsy Misaya. The said sub grouping of the rebels makes them more mobile and hard to detect.

“Despite this, we are still able to track them and we are using different maneuvers to detect and engage them,” Tan finally added.

Earlier, Army commander Lt. Gen. Eduardo Año said that there will be three more battalions to be sent and expected to arrive in the province of Sulu.
