Mga higala! A Kangaroo Mother Care Unit has been opened for the sake of premature babies at the JR Borja General Hospital (JRBGH) of Cagayan de Oro City.

According to a report by the Philippine News Agency (PNA), JRGBH chief, Dr. Ramon Nery, expressed that the new unit is intended to give special care for premature newborn children without admitting them to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which is usually mixed with adult patients.

Nery also added that in the said ‘kangaroo unit’ mothers are allowed to caress and breastfeed their premature newborns, “A mother kangaroo keeps its baby in a pouch when it is born. The baby kangaroo is protected, fed and brought anywhere the mother goes in its pouch until it is ready to fend for itself.”

With this, the Kangaroo Mother Care Unit aims to prevent infant mortality and morbidity in Cagayan de Oro among premature newborns.

Moreover, the services of the kangaroo unit are FREE and those who gave birth in the city hospital will be given priority.
