Last February 8, 2017, Wednesday, tourism officials announced that the Department of Tourism in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DOT-ARMM) was able to record a total of 69,606 visitors in 2016 in Lanao del Sur alone posting P1.2 billion in tourism receipts, thus, becoming the no. 1 tourist destination among the 5 provinces in ARMM.

Despite the launching of the government forces’ massive operation against the Maute terror group, and the floods and landslides which had hit low-lying communities in the province last year, tourist visits still improved.

ARMM is composed of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

According to ARMM Tourism Secretary Ayesha Mangudadatu-Dilangalen, the five provinces were visited by 212,649 visitors in 2016, 14 percent better compared to 61,058 in 2015, with tourism-related expenditures of P3.7 billion. Dilangalen added that in the last quarter of 2016, an influx of tourists was observed in the region.

The following is the provincial breakdown of the region’s tourism data for 2016:

  • Tawi-Tawi
    • 63,509 visitors
    • PHP1.1 billion in gross receipts
  • Maguindanao
    • 40,981 visitors
    • PHP721 million in gross receipts
  • Basilan
    • 24,243 visitors
    • PHP424 million in gross receipts
  • Sulu
    • 13,857 visitors
    • PHP242 million in gross receipts

Lanao del Sur’s main attraction is the Lake Lanao which is the largest inland body of water in Mindanao and the second largest lake in the whole Philippines. Also, tourists are being lured by the arts and crafts of the Maranao tribe, Kilometer Zero, Polo Barakat Mosque in Binidayan, Mindanao State University and Daguduban in Marawi City, white water rafting in Wao and the Lake Dapao in Pualas town.
