27 Feb Task Force Kinaiyahan Tags Logging Corporations Illegally Operating in NorthMin Responsible for Decades of Deforestation
In a report from Sun.Star, 6 logging corporations were tagged by the environmental group Task Force Kinaiyahan responsible for the deforestation in Northern Mindanao. For the last 50 years, according to Task Force Kinaiyahan chairman Orlando Ravanera, the following were found to have been operating illegally in areas of Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro, and Lanao:
- Bicmar Logging Company
- Dacudao and Sons
- Remedios Fortich
- Roa Logging
- Tipi Wood Corporation
- Valderama and Sons
Ravanera said that the above mentioned logging corporations are to be blamed for the floods that occurred in the last decade, adding that an inch of rainfall coming from these denuded areas already translates to a meter of flood water in the city which supposed to go to the tributaries.
Thought to have violated the timber license agreement and failed to replant after their operations, the tagged logging corporations can still get arrested. With this, Ravanera is urging the national government to go after these illegal loggers and the personnel of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for allowing them to operate.
Meanwhile, Usec Ipat Luna of the DENR has promised to go after the tagged logging corporations.
