In an article from Sunstar Cagayan de Oro, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB)-Northern Mindanao Office said that with the presence of the two-day nationwide transport strike starting today, October 16 to 17, it will regularly check on drivers and operators who are joining the strike.

LTFRB-Northern Mindanao Director Regional Director Aminoden Guro said that he previously reminded all Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) drivers and operators that joining in transport strikes is not allowed and insisting to do so will result to them being penalized by the law.

Guro, however, said to the Public Utility Jeepney (PUJ) drivers and operators strike that they will be given the chance to redeem themselves and explain why they have not gone on duty should they join the nationwide strike.

To address the expected absence of many jeepney vehicles, Guro said that the LTFRB has already asked three major bus companies in the city to lend some of their bus units for passengers who may not be able to get a ride until the transport strikes end at around 4 PM. The buses will be stationed at the city hall area and are only awaiting orders to be deployed.

Several transport groups are respected to  join the transport strike as a protest against the move of the government to phase out the traditional jeepney unit and to introduce a modern and more advanced version with electrically-operated or the Euro 4 fuel standards compliant features.

The real concern of some PUJ drivers and operators is the cost of upgrading to the new version of the jeepney that is too expensive for them to afford.
