23 May MisOr Provincial board wants all barangay heads to undergo drug test
In response to the growing concerns of barangay chairpersons getting involved in the illegal drug trade, Misamis Oriental Provincial Board Member Gerardo Sabal III proposed that a mandatory drug test on barangay chairpersons be pushed in the province.
In an article from Sunstar.com, Sabal is pushing for the mandate so that a similar incident such as the arrest of Cogon, Balingasag chairperson Robert Anthony Valmores involving illegal drugs would be prevented.
Upon the order of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Association of Barangay Chairmen (ABC) in Misamis Oriental had started calling the attention of barangay chairpersons in the province to have themselves checked for illegal substances in their system.
Sabal, on the other hand, would want to enforce a tougher version of the mandate so that no one could evade the drug test since barangay captains can use their position to manipulate results and conceal their involvement in the drug trade. He also would want to know the percentage of barangay chairmen who have undergone the test among the 424 barangays in the province.
ABC will hold a convention on May 22 to 23 and on May 29 to 30 2017 in two batches wherein one of the topics to be discussed is the issue of illegal drugs.
