13 Dec Mayor Moreno To Sign Free Wifi Project To be Implemented in CDO
To implement the Free Wifi Internet Access Project, the Cagayan de Oro City Council has approved an ordinance empowering City Mayor Oscar Moreno to sign and approve a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Department of the Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
According to a report from Sun.Star, to improve economic, social, and educational opportunities, the National Government through the DICT is proposing the Free Internet Access in Public Places Project to be implemented across the country.
The project is intended to give free wifi access nationwide and will initially include selected cities and municipalities, covering public schools, libraries, hospitals, rural health units, police stations, state universities and colleges, public transport terminals, seaports, and airports.
Stated in the MOA that all barangays are encouraged to promote the implementation of the project without postponement.
Training and orientations will be conducted by the DICT to the local government units (LGU) included. LGUs are to assess and manage periodic monitoring of the internet connectivity and provide the scheme for proper governance of the free internet access service.
The electric power cost of all public wifi devices installed in LGU run facilities is to be paid by the LGU. And they have to provide maintenance to the wifi equipment.
