Mga higala! The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has clarified that the recent EARTHQUAKES in Mindanao, including the magnitude 6.9 last December 15, are not linked to any volcanic activity and is not caused by the Mt. Apo!

According to ABS-CBN News, PHIVOLCS wants to clarify this issue because worried netizens have posted on social media asking if Mt. Apo is a potentially active stratovolcano, and they want to know if it is “waking up.”

In regards to this, Ishmael Narag, officer-in-charge of Phivolcs’ Seismological Observation and Earthquake Prediction Division, explained that the earthquakes don’t show the same “migration of clusters” or patterns seen when Mt. Pinatubo, an active volcano in Luzon, erupted.

He also added that the recent tremors were “nearly linear” or around the area of the faultlines in Mindanao and that the public does not need to worry because they have instruments to monitor Mt. Apo’s status.
