02 Aug NorthMin among the highest rates in teenage pregnancy and premarital sex
In an article posted by Sunstar.com, the Regional Population Commission (POPCOM-10) said that Northern Mindanao has one of the highest rate of early-age sexual encounters and teenage pregnancies in the country.
The commission indicated that the understanding of the matter and awareness about sexual participation are one of the main factors of the issue.
The rapid increase of teenage pregnancies in the region was found out by the Demographic Research and Development Foundation Incorporated of the University of the Philippines through the paper entitled “Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study 2013”.
Data from the study revealed that sexual participation of youth and teenage pregnancy has dramatically increased from 2002 to 2013 with subjects aged 15-19 years old.
According to the study, the insufficient access to sex education resulted in risky sexual engagement among the youth in Region 10 as well as impregnating young women before they reach 20 years old.
The study divided the cases of teenage pregnancy according to age. Females who starting bearing children at the age of 15 constitute 1.4 percent, sixteen years old is 1.6 percent, seventeen years old is 6.1 percent, eighteen years old is 26.1 percent and by nineteen years old is 51.4 percent which is more than half of the total population of females at 19 years old.
Arsua added that improved communication within the family is still the best solution to address the rising number of teenage pregnancy and adolescent sex in the region.
