27 Oct NPA Admits Attacks on Quarry Area in Butuan City
The New People’s Army (NPA) released an official statement yesterday, October 26, admitting the responsibility of the attack on a quarry in Butuan City last October 21 which resulted in the burning of about P9 million of heavy equipment.
In an article by Sunstar.com.ph, the statement of the NPA was released through the group’s North Central Mindanao Regional (NCMR) command, saying that its Western Agusan del Norte- Agusan del Sur (WANAS) Subregional Command carried out the attack against the Gil M. Cembrano (GMC) Construction Company in the area for its alleged activities that led to the destruction of the environment.
Ka Omar Ibarra, spokesperson to the NPA, disclosed that the group immobilized four backhoes of the company to stop its supposed environment-unfriendly quarry operations and its plans to expand the scope of the operations which will possibly leave the surrounding residences homeless.
Ibarra also claimed that the group was also behind the killing of 12 soldiers in two different encounters after the quarry attack.
However, Captain Regie Go, Civil Military Operation Officer (CMO) of the 402-Brigade, negated such claims of the rebels and said that there was no soldier died during the clash but one soldier was indeed wounded.
On the other hand, Captain Joe Patrick Martinez, Spokesperson of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division (4ID), said that the incident was an isolated case and that there are actually stalled attacks of the rebel groups due to the regular reporting of the concerned companies.
Moreover, Martinez has previously advised the companies to improve their security measures and there should be regular trainings of their security personnel.
