05 Jun Oro Youth Development Council establishes first #CityLab youth empowerment program
The Oro Youth Development Council (OYDC) in collaboration with the City Social Development Office (CSWD) established the youth empowerment organization program called #CityLab last May 26-28, 2017 at the Balay Mindanaw Training Center.
The pioneering members of the new organization are mostly members of the Oro Youth Development Council and other participating groups in the event.
In a Facebook post from the Oro Youth Development Council, #CityLab is a program that aims to serve as a training ground for youth leaders in governance and self-determination where they will be allowed to propose different community projects to be passed for funding from the city’s annual budget itself.
In connection to the legalization of the organization, the local government will be giving out more effort on forming civic youth leaders in the community upon the enactment of the Oro Youth Code.
Speakers from various organizational bodies discussed different issues in the community and the roles of these organizations and the youth in realizing projects for the betterment of the community.
During the event, the participants were given the task to write down the issues they are experiencing inside their organization and within the community and present them on an “Issue Wall”. After that, they were to propose projects based on the compounded issues that they previously presented.
They also gave out their inputs on youth protection programs run by CSWD and how they will be able to help to improve these programs.
The planning part of the discussions came up with 8 areas of engagements namely environment protection; peace building; discrimination; youth participation; youth health; digital citizenship; governance and social audit; and services for out of school youth.
From there, different projects concerning the community were then proposed and were subjected to scrutiny and evaluation for potential funding.
With the potential of #CityLab program, the OYDC hopes that it will be pushed through towards becoming a regular yearly gathering of youth leaders and will be able to encourage more to learn about local governance and spearhead projects for the benefit of the youth.
