25 Jul Pampanga-made lanterns to strengthen Filipino spirit amidst challenging times
Pampanga-made giant lanterns were started to be distributed to 10 cities and towns in Visayas and Mindanao including Cagayan de Oro City to be lighted altogether this August in a ceremony with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte which will mark the start of the activities of the upcoming Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in November.
In an article from Inquirer.net, the giant lanterns significantly are made to encourage Filipinos to maintain a positive outlook in life amid the ongoing battle of the government with terrorism and other catastrophic phenomena like the recent earthquake experienced in the Visayas region.
According to Arvin Quiwa, owner of Quiman Trading and head designer of the giant lanterns, the crafts will also be distributed to Malaybalay, Ozamiz, Davao, Tacloban, Ormoc and Puerto Princesa, and the towns of Malay in Aklan province and Mina in Iloilo province.
Quiwa himself outlined the design of the lanterns to each have a 6-feet diameter and contain depictions of the national leaf, Anahaw; national flower, Sampaguita; and a Mindanaoan traditional sail boat, Vinta.
Quiwa and his team became known after spearheading the creation of the display of giant lanterns in Singapore with the help of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the country last September of last year to commemorate Christianity in Asia.
