June 30, 2016 when Rodrigo Roa Duterte took his oath of becoming the Philippines’ new president. Voted by 16.6 million Filipinos, at the age of 71 years old, he is the first Mindanaoan to lead the country.
But not only that, Duterte is a president of many firsts.
Being the former mayor of Davao City, Duterte is the first city mayor to win presidency.Though Joseph Estrada was also a city mayor, but he went through being a senator and vice president before becoming president of the Philippines in 1998.
Born in Maasin, Leyte, Duterte is the first president born in the said place.
Elected in his 70s, specifically 71 years of age, Duterte is the first president in his age and oldest to assume the presidency.
Duterte is the first president to be nationally elected without being elected at a national position in the previous years.
Worked as a Special Counsel for the City Prosecution Office of Davao City from 1977 to 1979, then as a Fouth Assistant City Prosecutor from 1979 to 1981, Third Assistant City Prosecutor from 1981 to 1983, and Second Assistant City Prosecutor from 1983 to 1986, making him the first former city prosecutor to become president.
OIC in 1986 then elected as a vice mayor in 2010, Duterte is the first president who previously served the mentioned former position.
Graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Major in Political Science in 1968, Duterte is the first president to have studied in Lyceum of the Philippines University.
Obtained his Law degree in 1972, Duterte is the first president to have studied in San Beda College of Law.
Duterte also is the first president from Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
