PHIVOLCS' Safety Tips To Consider During a Strong Earthquake Amid COVID-19

While we are still battling against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), other threats such as strong earthquakes can happen at any time.

With this, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) published safety tips on how we can stay safe during and after an earthquake in times of COVID-19.

According to PHIVOLCS, earthquake evacuation is more important and should be prioritized over the COVID-19 “stay-at-home” order. But still, managing the risks of the disease among the public is a must.

Here are the steps on how we can ensure our safety during and after a strong earthquake.

  1. During a strong ground shaking, do the duck, cover, and hold.
  2. Once the shaking has died down, vacate the building through the fastest and safest way out while still observing at least one-meter distance. (Wear face masks and bring a prepared emergency bag.)
  3. Do not run, but walk promptly.
  4. Avoid pushing, but rather stay calm.
  5. Move on to the nearest open space and observe physical distancing.
  6. Don’t rush in going back, wait for the advisory from the building management.
