24 Aug PNP Chief Bato: “We are here to serve and protect. Hindi po kami butcher”
On August 23, Tuesday, during the investigation of drug-related deaths by the Senate, Philippine National Police chief, Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa was depressed that the media are degrading their image despite the people’s gratitude for their efforts.
Bato said, “Hindi po kami mamamatay tao. Kami ay pulis. We are here to serve and protect. Hindi po kami butcher na pinapatay ang tao na walang ka-rason rason.”
Yet, amidst his depression, Bato is still strengthened based on the fact that the people appreciated their efforts to combat drugs and criminality well.
He said, “Kapag ako ay pumupunta sa barangay ramdam na ramdam ko ang taumbayan, na lalapit sa akin, hahawakan ang kamay ko… at sasabihin na ‘sir salamat po sa ginawa niyo'”
The most noted groups that are pressing this negative image on the police are the overly-hyped Human Rights advocates and the Duterte administration critics.
Doubts are also spread that some of the police officers are using drugs themselves and has carried the operations on anti-drug usage and proliferation in an inhumane way.
But Dela Rosa remained firm in his vision of cleaning the ranks of the Police and reclaim its lost glory as trusted group of authority and not just a bunch of huge belly sentries doing nothing.
