On September 18, Sunday afternoon, a policeman was killed while his brother, also a police officer, was arrested as they robbed a convenience store in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

Authorities identified the slain officer as Police Officer 1 (PO1) Nirilvan Tañajura who was designated at the Gingoog City Police Office.

Detained at the Tagoloan Police Station is PO1 Whylder Tañajura, the elder brother. Whylder is apparently undertaking PNP scout training in the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB)-Northern Mindanao at Camp Capistrano, Gusa, Cagayan de Oro City.

It was said that the two suspects infiltrated the NSM Minimart at Poblacion Tagoloan and declared a hold-up as they take away an undetermined amount of cash.

On their way out, the suspects shoot their firearms and one of the store caretakers counter-attacked which killed Nirilvan and injured Whylder at the back.

Two caliber .38 revolvers and a police-issued Glock 17 pistol were confiscated by the police forensics team from the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) .

A paraffin test will be conducted on the suspects, Doctor Christian Caballes of the SOCO said.

Caballes stated, “Two fired bullets of 9mm were recovered inside the store. Pagtingin natin mayroong laman na granada dili mabuklat ang whole bag at EOD na ang mag-responde nito.”

The provincial police office will not condone police officers who practice criminal activities, said Misamis Oriental Provincial Police Office director, Senior Superintendent Manuel Sukarno Alvarez.

Alvarez said, “Appropriate charges will be filed against the officer at fault. As so with some of the PNP involved in illegal drugs.”

Victims of the suspects are encouraged to visit the Tagoloan police station to identify the surviving suspect, Alvarez advised.
