Polymedic Saves Baby Girl With First-Ever “Patent Ductus Arteriosus” Device Closure In Mindanao

Mga higala! The Polymedic Medical Plaza of Cagayan de Oro City has accomplished the first Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) device closure in Mindanao last February 14, 2021!

According to their post, a PDA is a passageway inside the heart where the blood passes thru from the mother. After birth, passageways like this are expected to close on their own within a few days (or maybe months). But sometimes these don’t close at all and pose a great threat to an infant’s life (and/or quality of life).

This is the case with Polymedic’s newborn preterm baby girl. Even after a month of close monitoring and maximized medical management, the PDA did not close and the baby girl became unstable.

This prompted the hospital’s medical team to ask the parents if they wanted to do the procedure. They then opted to trust the hospital and go through with the PDA device closure.

Thankfully, with the efforts of the Polymedic Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Team with Doctors Jocelyn Go, Maria Rowena Cabatino-Sanchez, James Herminio Salon, Kelvin Nacalaban, and Jean “Baymax” Villareal, and other medical staff, the procedure was successfully conducted and saved the baby girls life!

Woooh! So amazing higala!

The baby girl was extubated and breastfed an hour after the procedure. She then completed her remaining days in the incubator, went home, and met her siblings!
