POPCOM Urges Public to Prevent Unplanned Pregnancies Amid COVID-19 Crisis

In a recent statement last Tuesday, March 24, 2020, Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) Chief Undersecretary Juan Antonio Perez III urged the public to prevent unplanned pregnancies, especially now that community quarantines have been implemented in most cities and provinces, and couples are more likely to stay at home amid the threat of COVID-19.

He added, “We are uncertain as to when the health emergency caused by COVID-19 will abate. As such, we do not want to add on to the current situation with another possible crisis caused by unplanned pregnancies, as they could bear added weight to our already strained medical institutions.”

Due to this, Perez is calling on couples and individuals to consider family planning while they try to maintain their health in their homes during this health emergency.

POPCOM will be working with LGUs in order to ensure that couples have access to family planning supplies such as birth control pills and condoms, as well as family planning services.
