19 Jan Presence of Chinese Civilians on China’s Man-Made Island in South China Sea
China is being more assertive about its claims towards territorial dispute in South China Sea allowing a group of tourists to visit its controversial artificial man-made island.
These said tourists are all families of soldiers being stationed on the island brought by a Hainan Airlines plane. Pictures showing happy family reunions were published on the news portal with these uniformed Chinese soldiers together with their wives and young kids.
Beijing sent test flights with empty planes around the artificial territory the past week, stimulating protests from Vietnam. But the Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei responded to Hanoi’s opprobrium telling that the test flights were regulated “within China’s territory”, thus legal. This territory is part of the Spratly chain which is being competitively claimed among countries including China, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei.
