Mga higala! President Rodrigo Duterte has vetoed or rejected the “Anti-Palo” Bill, a measure that would prohibit parents from beating their children, and from giving physical forms of punishment in order to discipline them.

Malacañang recently released documents showing that Duterte refused to sign the bill last February 23.

According to the Asian Journal, the president expressed that responsible parents can and have administered corporal punishment in a self-restrained manner, such that the children think of it not as “an act of hate or abuse” but “a loving act of discipline that desires only to uphold their welfare.”

He also added that restrained corporal punishment has given rise to “beneficial results” for society, by citing that because of this, countless children have “become law-abiding citizens with a healthy respect for authority structures in the wider community.”

Senator Risa Hontiveros filed the Anti-Palo Bill, which she said aims to promote “positive and nonviolent discipline of children.”
