20 Feb Religious, Academic Institutions Firmly Disagree to Proposed Casino in CDO
Following the games and amusement committee hearing conducted last February 17, religious and academic institutions showed their clear disagreement to the proposed casino to be established by Limketkai Sons Inc.
According to a report from Sun.Star, a letter from the priests and clergy of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro was read by Monsignor Francisco Salvador which says that the church cannot just ignore the unfavorable effects of gambling and that organized and systematic gambling, legal or illegal, is not attractive in the society as it “seriously erodes the moral values of the people.”
He said that the church of Cagayan de Oro takes a stand to, first, denounce illegal gambling in all its forms and prevent its legalization, combat the expansion of organized and systematic gambling such as the establishing casinos, refrain from soliciting funds from illegal gambling so as not to promote a culture of gambling, and to encourage church institutions to refrain from doing the same even when the objective be with that of the poor.
Gambling is an addiction and a disease, said the Lay Faithful of the Archdiocese adding that the casino will take more than what it may give for the city and that gambling will not attract tourists, but gambling will only attract gamblers.
Lourdes College will always support the opinion of the church, said Myrna Fantonalgo, Lourdes College’s external affairs coordinator, adding that a research has shown that poor people spent a higher proportion of their income in gambling.
