26 Apr Remembering the CDeO 2012 and 2013 bombings
The national media has once again been shaken by the latest news on the entrapment of one of the alleged Abu-Sayaff members, Renierlo Dongon, along with one police officer, Superintendent Maria Christina Nobleza in Bohol. It eventually turned out that Dongon, is one of the suspects of two bombing incidents in Cagayan de Oro in 2012 and 2013. Let us take a look at these incidents and how it changed the history of Cagayan de Oro.
Maxandrea Hotel – 2012
At 2 am in the morning, when the sun as well as the people were still at their deep slumber, Cagayan de Oro, a city that has never been visited by bombing incidents of such extreme, were awakened by the news. With the use of Improvised Explosive Device (IED), two bombs have exploded just outside of Maxandrea Hotel killing at least 2 people and injured 2 people as well. It was reported that there were two IED planted for the bombing but the second one which was left underneath a nearby car was luckily diffused immediately by the authorities. But no matter how weak or strong the bomb explosion may be, some lives were still wasted and properties were damaged. Just after the hotel’s management team alerted the police that there was a suspicious package outside their building, an attendant in the nearby Willshire Inn named Rudy Jute came outside to see the crowd’s fuss. It was when the bomb exploded and he too became one of the victims.
Candy’s Café and Kyla’s Bistro at the Rosario Arcade, Limketkai Center – 2013
The second tragic event occurred before midnight along the strip of Rosario Arcade between Candy’s Cafe and Kyla’s Bistro just when people are celebrating their much awaited Friday night getaway. All of a sudden, the busy and vibrant life of the area became one of Cagayan de Oro’s worst nightmare after six people have died and 48 have been injured in the wake of the explosion. One thing to note about this bombing incident was that most of the victims were delegates from a national convention that was held at Grand Caprice also located inside Limketkai Center a few blocks from where the bomb exploded. One can only imagine how the families that they left at home felt when a seemingly ordinary day for their loved one became an unexpected twist of their lives.
As a form of terrorism, bombing is definitely a hindrance to a society’s vision for progress. As one nation, let us support any efforts to chase down any form of terrorism. And as part of a progressive city, we Kagay-anons should be the prime movers towards a peaceful community.
