For the first time in the Philippines’ long history, the House of Representatives has approved a bill providing for divorce and dissolution of marriage yesterday, March 19, despite President Duterte’s opposition.

The voting process yielded the result of 134 congressmen in favor of the Divorce Bill, 57 voted against, while 2 abstained.

Gabriela Party-list group, one of the advocates of the said bill ignored Duterte’s objection, saying that this is needed so that women trapped in abusive relationships and irreparable marriages can have a choice.

Meanwhile, according to the presidential spokesperson, Harry Roque, President Rodrigo Duterte believes that approving the divorce bill in the Philippines would produce worse effects for children and couples alike.
