Senate Approves SIM Card Registration Bill: Goodbye Text Scams?

Mga higala! Senators approved a bill last week (December 16) requiring mobile phone users to register their SIM cards!

If passed into law, the said bill, Senate Bill (SB) 2395, or the proposed SIM Card Registration Act, will require the public to register their SIM cards with their respective telecommunication firms (Smart, Globe, DITO).

Not registering will lead to the deactivation of a user’s SIM card number.

ICYDK, this measure aims to stop the rising cases of related crimes like text scams (smishing), disinformation, bank fraud, trolling, hate and indecent messages, and more.

Violators will receive severe fines and/or penalties.
