Shortage of Face Masks, Thermal Guns in CDO A Challenge in the Battle Against COVID-19

Cagayan de Oro City has been under a Community Quarantine which started at midnight last March 19, 2020, as an effort in battling against the spread of COVID-19. However, with the lack of face masks, thermal guns, and other essential medical equipment, the efforts of the health workers are being challenged, with their lives being put at higher risks every single day!

Some checkpoints only have one thermal gun to check hundreds of commuters entering the city, while other checkpoints don’t even have a thermometer, so they just resorted to spraying the hands of each motorist with disinfectants.

Moreover, most local governments didn’t anticipate that COVID-19 would spread this fast, and they are now having difficulty with where to purchase the necessary tools to fight the virus.

Thankfully, some individuals and organizations heeded the call of health workers and donated alcohol, face masks, gloves, and food. Washable masks and improvised face shields made from plastic were also provided to the medical staff of the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC).

But, this is still not enough.

The hospital is awaiting the arrival of the thermal guns. And soon, the city government will implement its plan of inspecting houses to houses to check for those who might be infected with the virus.
