This month in Cagayan de Oro City, 11 containers of plywood arrived. These containers are subject for scrutinization by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) to determine if it is smuggled or not.

Due to high demand, the smuggling of Plywood in Mindanao has been the norm of the law-breaking businessmen. These prompted the Bureau of Customs (BOC) to tighten its security to these kinds of shipments.

The plywoods have different consignees, Premiere Oak Lumber and Wood Products Corp. and StarTrade Marketing. Both have mis-declared the weight of the plywoods that they have shipped.

Intelligence agent and officer on case Nurhussin Sajili, said in his memorandum to CIIS-CDO officer-in-charge Alvin Enciso, “it was ascertained that the actual weight registered was 30.99, a huge difference from what was declared in the entry.”

The plywood shipment was sent to Mindanao Container Terminal in CDO with a value of US$ 153 per cubic meter, but its recommended value was at US$ 185 per cubic meter.

This smuggled plywoods will trigger a drop in prices of this kind of items, which will eventually lead to a price change in the market.

The BOC have lost millions every year because of plywood smuggling, due to the fact that importers do not pay the right duties and taxes for their products.

CIIS-CDO is currently monitoring the plywood imports for the city to prevent another smuggling activity in our very own port of CDO.
