13 Jun Solon proposes renaming PH to distance itself from its colonial past
Former captain turned mutineer turned Congressman, Gary Alejano, proposed yesterday – at the hour of celebrating the 119th year Philippine Independence, to change the name of the Philippines to stray away from its colonial past.
It is part of the country’s rich history being colonized by the Spaniards over 300 years after Ferdinand Magellan land in the county in 1521. Representative Alejano wants to create a Geographical Renaming Commission to throw away the bonds of colonialism and establish a national identity.
Alejano added that other countries have revoked the name given to them by their colonizers while the Philippines chose to retain the name.
