22 Apr Don’t Stop Learning this Summer – Here are 9 Summer Workshops You Should Try
Summer vacation means the kids get to stay home, and the adults have more time on their hands aside from regular work. But for the kids, don’t you get tired of hearing the same old boring summer class or workshop suggestions from your parents like piano lessons, voice lessons, or even swimming classes? Maybe it’s time you kids stared down your parents and told them, “mom/dad, I don’t want to do those things” (and has anyone ever told you that I have a phobia to deep water). Since there’s a really long vacation time ahead, why not go for stuff that you’ll never do at school, try something new or unique, or something you’ve always been curious about.
As for the parents, instead of badgering your kids to take classes that won’t even serve them in the future (you want your kid to be a piano bar player, well, go ahead), why not go out yourself and enroll in one of those workshops you’ve always wanted to try but were always afraid of. Go ahead, because who knows, you may unlock something from yourself you never knew you had.
Baristas Workshop
Ever wondered how much baristas earn in coffee shops, even on part-time basis? Did you know that making all those coffee and other beverages is an art of its own? Why not attend a barista workshop or class and discover this reality? Many of Cagayan de Oro’s culinary schools and colleges offer summer classes/workshops for barista and brew making. Who knows, when the kids grow up they might decide to go abroad with this knowledge, or you can open your own coffee shop business.
Archery Lessons
Put away those soccer lessons and search for archery classes, and discover if you have the heart of Merida or Legolas. You may discover that you’ve got what it takes to be an archer and even join competitions, or even reach the Palarong Pambansa. Archery classes are sometimes offered by your local universities or colleges, or you can search online for it. It’s only around 2 hours per day, 3 times a week. It’s daunting and challenging at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll want to be a regular Robin Hood.
Programming or Web Coding Classes
Just because you’re no computer geek doesn’t mean you can’t code. The city’s computer schools and colleges offer summer classes for web or programming coding, basic electronics and computing, game designing, and even robotics. The classes are challenging but having basic knowledge of these may come in handy later in life. You don’t have to be gifted in the sciences to attend these classes. You never know what you may discover from your inner Zuckerberg or Gates desires.
Kickboxing or martial arts
This can be fun because you stay fit while learning to defend yourself in the near future. It also teaches discipline and how to stay organized, while being a great stress reliever and removing all that negative energy. Learning how to fight back and defend yourself in extreme situations that require physical strength will come in handy later on when the need arises. There are several kickboxing and martial arts studios all over the city that offer summer beginner classes or even weekend classes.
Makeup Classes
Seriously, instead of those boring art classes, learning how to paint your face, and others’ faces, is a skill that will come in handy and useful later on and save you money instead of hiring someone to do it. You can even earn some money on the side by being a part-time makeup artist. It’s actually an underappreciated form of art and skill, and local artists like Paolo Ballesteros are trying to upgrade the skills level of makeup artists. You can search for this online or inquire from TESDA accredited schools.
Sports Power Camps and Clinics
There’s nothing wrong and boring if you still want to channel your energies towards your favorite sports. You might even be discovered later on as the next Chris Ross or Alyssa Valdez. There are annual corporate power camps that are held in the major universities and colleges in the city. You can learn basketball, football, volleyball, and even archery (see number 2 above), chess, gymnastics, ice skating, tennis, table tennis, rugby, triathlon, and badminton while also learning discipline, determination, hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship. There are also some camps and sports clinics available for adults.
Culinary Arts
We never said the culinary and baking arts were boring, because becoming a culinary chef or baking/pastry chef is a very difficult road to take. But if you feel you’ve got what it takes to be a master chef or take on the chef wars, by all means, inquire from the culinary schools around Cagayan de Oro or from colleges or universities. They all offer some form of short culinary and pastry classes usually only twice a week or on weekends, sort of like beginner introductory classes.
Photography Workshop
So you have the shutter bug and you have the eye for composing dramatic pictures, or perhaps you have a dream of becoming a Pulitzer Prize winner as CNN’s top photojournalist. Whatever you want from photography, this is one hobby that can easily turn later on in life into something you can cash into whether full-time or part-time. You can search online for schools that offer summer photography clinics, or you can inquire from local photographer professionals about summer workshops offered by out-of-town photojournalists. Photography today is the only hobby/career that actually costs less than what it used to up to the 1990’s. This is because with the digitalization of image creation, the photographer no longer has to spend tons of cash on films and developing, including the chemicals.
Bonus: You Meet Other Creatives
Summer classes and workshops will be filled with people just like you, interested in exploring something new or unique or a passion they’ve kept hidden for a long time. This is a great way to meet like-minded friends who can understand you. You can use these classes or workshops to make lasting connections with future friends or perhaps a future business partner.
