09 Aug United States, Troubled by the Philippines’ Intense Battle Against Drugs
On Monday, August 8, the United States expressed its concern to the present situation in the Philippines on its intense battle against drugs.
The US State Department said in a statement, “We are concerned by these detentions, as well as the extrajudicial killing of individuals suspected to be involved in drug activity in the Philippines.”
A bloody result has been the result of the bold offense that the newly elected President of the Philippines waged from the time of his inauguration 2 months ago.
President Duterte has been constantly monitored by the ally from the west and just as their friendship goes, their mutual sharing of reminders strengthens.
The latest of which is what the State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau stated. “We believe in the rule of law. We believe in due process. We believe in respect for universal human rights,” she said.
She also added, saying, “We believe – fundamentally – that those aspects ensure and promote long-term security,” she said. “We are concerned about these detentions, as well as the extrajudicial killing of individuals suspected to be involved in drug activity in the Philippines,” focusing on the bloody war against drugs in the Philippines.
Since Duterte holds office on June, there are already 400 reported deaths that are drug related in the Philippines. This number does not include the unsolved and unreported cases. The actual number could be higher than this.
Just recently, on Monday, August 7, President Duterte publicly identified more than 160 judges, mayors, legislators, police and military individuals allegedly involved in narcotics and commanded them to surrender.
The US has not yet boldly taking action on Duterte’s drive against drugs and criminality in the Philippines. This message of concern might just be an indication that their eyes are in the Philippines, being an ally for an old time.
