US JTWC Classifies Odette As A Super Typhoon

Super Typhoon

Mga higala! The US Navy and Air Force’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center (US JTWC) in Hawaii has classified Odette (Rai) as a Super Typhoon!

According to the said agency, the said typhoon currently has maximum sustained winds of 140 knots (259 kilometers per hour) and gusts reaching 170 knots (314 kph).

ICYDK, the US JTWC categorizes typhoons with wind speeds of at least 130 knots as super typhoons.

However, this is based on their 1-minute average measurements of sustained winds and is different from PAGASA’s 10-minute average measurements.

This is why US JTWC’s readings are higher and Odette is still a “typhoon” based on PAGASA’s data.

Watch out for updates!
