10 Mar Having a US Military Base in Cagayan de Oro Will Bring Prostitution, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Abandoned Kids According to Gabriela
With the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement or EDCA between the US and the Philippines being approved by the Supreme Court last January, a US military base will rise in Lumbia airport.
This alarmed Gabriela, a women’s group, for according to them, having a US military base in Cagayan de Oro will bring more serious problems in the city such as prostitution, sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS and increase incidence of abandoned children, citing from what happened to Clark and Subic bases.
Gabriela Spokesperson of the Northern Mindanao region (NMR), Rhodora Bulosan, provided the warning along the 105th year commemoration of International Women’s Day, Tuseday.
As said by Ms. Bulosan, people must learn about what happened in Clark abd Subic bases in the past where prostitution and abuses were unrestrained while the US base enjoyed exemption over cases of violating rights towards women and children and tax holidays. She added that around 60,000 Amerasians were abandoned by American servicemen contending that those children were products of prostitution and dishonest affairs not considering the welfare of the children. Which also led to an increased number of street children. Also, concerning about the sexually transmitted disease such as HIV/AIDS. Thus, should the US military facility be built and start operating, such scenarios can also fatefully happen in Cagayan de Oro City.
