Vatican Asks Priests To Just “Sprinkle” Ashes On Devotees Heads During Ash Wednesday

A

Mga higala! In a recently released memo, the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments expressed that they are now asking priests to just “sprinkle” the ashes on the heads of devotees during Ash Wednesday, on February 17, 2021, instead of making a cross on their foreheads!

This aims to be part of the special precautions against COVID-19 for this year’s religious events.

According to the said memo, priests must cleanse their hands and put on a face mask before starting the ceremony. After this, they can then sprinkle the ashes on the heads of each devotee that comes to them “without saying anything” (or they can go to where the devotees are standing, without making them line up).

(The memo specifies that the required face masks should cover the priests’ nose and mouth.)
