Visiting “Treasures Camiguin” And Seeing The Beauty Of Turning Trash Into Treasures Thru Upcycling

“Camiguin” tells stories of vibrant white sands, clear blue skies, depths of mountainous views, and clear waters that completes a perfect image of what an island paradise is. And in that paradise lies treasure waiting to be found and made into something that embodies glamour, pure artistry, and local camaraderie, carrying wholeheartedly the advocacy of turning trash into treasures thru upcycling.

Treasures Camiguin is known for their famous Sea Glass Jewelry which were molded by the ocean, and handcrafted by the women of Agoho.

We had the privilege of visiting and having a short conversation with one of the owners (Sir Cocoy Bajuyo) at Balai sa Baibai, which is one of the Zenest place in Camiguin by the way, and we found out that they discovered the beauty of Sea Glass thru a New Yorker who once stayed at their resort. That very guest introduced them to what Sea Glass is and how it was big in the States and in other parts of the world. That story opened their eyes towards the many possibilities on how they can incorporate arts and crafts with the gifts that the island posses with the intention of turning trash into treasures thru upcycling as well.

Sir Cocoy mentioned that what the island has, or what it is gifted with is the natural form of sea glass that took as much as atleast 30 years of natural molding by the sea, adding to its smoothness and its earthly formation. And interestingly, he said that a lof of the glass they found wasn’t originally from the island and belong to other parts of the country.

Over time, and many designs after, they begin too receive overwhelming praises and positive feedbacks with their products and the humble Sir Cocoy even mentioned that they didn’t expect it to glow that much on a wide scale, attracting several magazines, bloggers, and major TV networks, all wanting to know more about the product and the island that carries it. In fact it even got the attention of the famous travel VLOG/Show “Biyahe ni Drew”, and of course, the beautiful Candidates of 2017 Miss Universe Pageant.

I guess we can say that if they owed the blessings to the Island, they definitely had the best answer on how to repay it tenfold with the emergence of Treasures Camiguin.
